It's the Star Wars pun that launched an unofficial holiday celebrated by fans from around the World. The Walt Disney Company officially started to celebrate May the 4th in 2013, with a number of Star Wars events and festivities at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. In late 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm, including the rights to Star Wars.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
May 4th Be with you gets its origin from a line of dialogue in the first movie released in George Lucas' space saga, "Star Wars: A New Hope." In the film, released back in 1977, General Dodonna encourages the rebel fighters before they begin their assault on the Death Star, "Then man your ships! And may the Force be with you!"
The Walt Disney Company officially started to celebrate May the 4th in 2013, however, the catchphrase that was officially used came in 1979, when the U.K. Conservative Party paid for a newspaper advertisement saying, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!” to celebrate the party's general election victory.
